Amazing Transformation

by | Dec 1, 2020 | 16 comments

Where I stood was once upon a time a deep sea area and now transformed into a beautiful coastline with a Marina Bay that was built entirely on reclaimed land.

Above photo was captured during my Friday morning walk with Miso at the Marina Barrage area and I really enjoyed the quietness on a weekday. All my past few visits had been on a crowded weekend.

Weather was not at its best, it had been cloudy and wet these past few weeks, so the photos captured reflected a very gloomy skyline. Despite that, I was so glad I came as it was so peaceful and cooling. I totally enjoyed the beauty by the bay in a totally different perspective.

Marina Barrage (MB) is a dam in Singapore built at confluence of five rivers across the Marina Channel that turns Marina Bay into a new downtown freshwater Marina Reservoir. It provides water supply, flood control and a new lifestyle attraction.

Marina Bay is ideal for all kinds of recreational activities such as boating, windsurfing kayaking and dragonboating.

Marina Bay Built On Landfill

Due to Covid 19, the usual viewing gallery was closed but I was glad to capture this different perspective of the Barrage Bridge.

Standing at the bridge, I felt a great sense of peace and gratitude as I took this photo looking into the Marina Bay capturing the Business District and Key Iconic Attractions Skyline. What an amazing transformation ! Where I stood used to be just deep sea some 30 years back and the Marina Bay, which was built entirely on reclaimed land, is now one of the top visited place for both local and tourist alike.

While it was not a perfect shot, it was a great moment of reflection as I looked at the images of the scene. A rare sight to capture the almost mirror liked reflection as the bay was usually very crowded with many water activities which are now impacted by the Covid-19.

The Barge Vessel

A view into the sea from the bridge. There were many ships and boat vessels anchored and this barge caught my attention.

My usual curious engineer trained mind drove me to ask an impromptu question to one of the staff stationed at the bridge about the barge vessel. So I found out that it is a Repair and Maintenance barge servicing the underwater pipeline that transports water from the Marina Reservoir to the Water Treatment Plant that converts it to drinkable water.

Blue Structure On Wheels

As I was chatting with the same staff member about the barge, I took the opportunity to ask him about this Blue Structure. What a rare opportunity that he had the time and I was so thankful that he was very patient explaining to me.

The structure is meant to lift and shift Boats between the Marina Bay and the open sea. These boats would be shifted into Bay as Tour Boats or Military Boats for  performance during festive celebrations like the National Day Parade, and then out back into the sea to be transported to designated shipyard for repair and maintenance.

The movements used to be very active but it had since been very badly hit by Covid-19. All festive celebrations, such as National Day Parade and Tour Boats were all cancelled due to social distancing control.

May Covid-19 be under complete control soon so that all social activities can be resumed.

A Relaxing And Insightful Walk

Miso was very patient as I made many stops to enjoy the view and to take photos along our walk.

I took “The Picnic Chair” photo as I was amused and inspired by this person who created a little “picnic area” right next to his car to enjoy the beautiful sea breeze. What a great idea and I thought I could do the same the next time !

The Marina Barrage Bridge walk is linked all the way to the Gardens By the Bay and there were many cyclists and joggers along this trail.

Such a beautiful coastline. In the past, I would never have taken notice or appreciate the beauty but now I am enjoying every moment of it. An extremely relaxing walk and a good learning trip too !

Feeling blessed 🙏🏻
