An Unusual Chinese New Year Blessings Of Giving

Have you ever experienced how by giving to others you can restore your peace?… I am sure you have heard of this phrase ‘it’s a blessing to give’, yet how many of us have genuinely experienced its blessings…

Today is the 15th day of Chinese New Year (CNY) and also the official last day of celebration with traditions. This year’s CNY celebration had been the most unusual, but not just because of Covid-19 home visiting restrictions of eight unique visitors. I have unexpectedly ended up spending every single day at the hospital to accompany a close family member, lets call her M, who has been hospitalised for the past three weeks.

Despite a very demanding three weeks and handling all aspects of M’s medical conditions as her key spokesperson, I am pleasantly surprised that I did not feel stressed as I usually would in the past. Instead I am so at peace and happy that I can afford the time to give the right attention and support needed.

To Experience The Blessings Of Giving

It is indeed a blessing to give. Whatever you may give, when you give unconditionally and without expectation of rewards of any kind, you are giving a gift of love to the receiver.

The hospital experience has taught me a few aspects that must be practice to experience the blessings of giving :

1. Pure intention: to give something in order to bring happiness to the receiver. Gift can be in many forms and my gift to M is my attention and time.

When I visited M at the hospital ward on the eve of CNY, right after my early family reunion dinner, she gave a huge smile looking surprised. Well, M had been suffering from acute pain the week leading up to the New Year eve, so she had not smiled for a while. So this one smile meant so much and brought so much happiness to both of us !

2. Never yearning for a reward of any kind: true giving is the giving that comes from the depth of your heart, a heart that is genuinely kind and has the wish that others are happy and be free from suffering of any kind.

These past weeks, I saw genuine kindness from the nurses and doctors who gave very good care to M.  Well, you may say this is their job but no amount of reward can make this job sustainable if there was no practice of genuine love and kindness.

3. Never boast of your giving: your kind and generous giving must never be used for boosting your ego.

The cosmic law of attraction is at work at all times, and egoistical thinking has very low vibrational frequency. I know of many individuals who have been silently helping the needy, some of whom I only found out recently. They somehow carry with them a sense of peaceful feeling that is calm and joyful.

If you ever feel life is tiring and meaningless, try practising giving to someone who may need your gift, and see for yourself how your heart feels more uplifted, joyous and happier.

I concur with you fully. Never to expect a return when one gives. Giving should be totally unconditional. Don’t boast about our giving, but share our stories to influence others to do the same. There is true sense of satisfaction and happiness derived from giving unconditionally. Don’t judge as we give, cos everyone has a story.

I am just wondering if the very feeling that I am giving means a sense of Ego. Rather can we look at it as an opportunity to serve and offer our Gratitude to the other person for giving us the opportunity. When we view it as an opportunity to serve, there is no space for expectation of reward.

Lyn agree there are many different ways of giving e.g. give our time, our presence reflect on the practice of generosity. It is a virtue to give without any reward. I am happy for u. The moment your M saw u, she gave a smile. An unexpected visit especially during CNY. It demonstrates your love, compassion and kindness that lighten the heart of your M. Indeed being generous in giving not just brings joy to others but also to the givers. Hope u’ll always have everything u need and plenty left over to share with others. Wish u become richer in terms of happiness and well being.
