True Education… Do We Have It ?

by | May 21, 2021 | 18 comments

Education is not for earning a living but is for living a good life… I came across this phrase in a book I recently read and it really made me ponder…

Education in school trains a student to be fit for a job which earns him or her a livelihood. For the less developed countries or the under privileged, education is key to breaking the poverty cycle. This education is undoubtedly necessary to give one a head start in life towards a comfortable living.

The paper chase of getting good grades; going into good schools; securing a place in the University of choice; landing a good job; gotten married with children, and the cycle starts all over again with our children… been there and done that.

Being in the corporate world for half my life, I have interviewed candidates from various universities; worked with brilliant individuals who were top students; seen many who thrived on changes but also others who could not keep up; executives who never seemed to be happy with everything and anything; etc..

One notable observation is no matter what one’s educational background is; no matter how smart one is, it is ultimately the person’s good character and discipline that shows the most resilience through all kinds of challenges and thrive on them. These people always seem happier and more at peace with whatever that is happening around them and taking things in their stride.

Education Of The Heart

The technical knowledge we gained from secular education of the head and mind is just a stepping stone for earning a living and this changes with time. True education should promote character, morality and spirituality. This relates to the heart and comprises sacred qualities like humility, compassion, patience, truth, righteousness, love, etc.. These human values, which originate from the heart, are priceless.

So… Education … is for living a good life… To me, a good life is one that is simple and contented, live not for self alone, it is a life defined by good character with an open heart that is always kind and generous to society, a balanced life with the heart and mind that benefits everyone you have the good fortune of meeting.

Learn And Grow… With My WATCH

Now that I am retired from the corporate world, I have more time to learn and grow with this simple word WATCH … my Words, Actions, Thoughts, Character and Heart…

Our Words and Actions are triggered by our Thoughts. Often when a thought manifests into action, it becomes a habit that is often repeated, and then this habit develops into our Character. This is true education of the Heart.

A head and heart education combined will be extremely powerful in helping one live a good life.

First of all, Lyn thank u so much for posting so many awesome blog articles which not only teaches us real life experiences, it also helps in evolving us into a much wiser and better human being. I’ll head for your post every fri. Lyn well said. True education is beyond earning degrees. It means acquiring knowledge by learning but how do we learn. Yeah through our day to day experience – leads to overall development in character building and discipline. It means giving of love, right thinking and right acting, attitude of helping, able to bring changes to society, practice kindness, generosity, responsibilities, sacrifices and tolerance. These will lead us to live a meaningful, purposeful and valuable life. Agree, Lyn. True education is educating the mind and the heart. It makes people not only do the right things but enjoy them. In short. The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from u. As long as u live, keeping learning how to live. When u learn teach, when u get, give. Always do your best. What u plant now u will harvest later. Each new day comes new strength and new thought.

Very enlightening! In my time, education emphasized on morale, it was the base of our character, with skills on top, but gradually its only grades that all the teachers and parents wants. You should be a teacher instead, you have the passion for it…
