Learning To Follow My Heart…With Wisdom

by | Sep 24, 2021 | 16 comments

“Follow your heart…” One of my closest friends would often quote this phrase but deep down, I found myself struggling with how to practise…

Being a more logical person, I have a tendency to reason out situations or make decisions in a very logical manner. However, I had found myself in many confusing situations when my inner thoughts and feelings were not completely aligned.

How to follow the heart when our mind is in constant conflict ?

Our Mind Rules Our Heart

I am learning to realise that actually the heart and mind are very inter-connected and our feelings are ruled by our mind, examples :

  • if our mind is caring, our heart is soft and tender.
  • If our mind is greedy, our heart bends towards being unkind, jealous and even ungiving.
  • If our mind is confused and unclear, our heart cannot find stability and calm.

So to follow one’s heart, one must understand one’s mind. Following the heart without a thoughtful mind could potentially lead to carelessness.

Wisdom Of The Heart

There is a common quote “the older you get, the wiser you are”. The belief that wisdom is acquired through experience and since older people have more experience in life, they will be wiser. While this may be generally true, I have also come across younger people who came across wiser than the older ones.

One gets wiser when one learns from each situation humbly and sincerely…There are some who would repeat the same mistakes again and again as they never really face the painful truth of their situations and learn from them.

Wisdom has many levels and needs the basic understanding of life’s truth which not many really spend time to understand deeply. Starting with simple wisdom called common sense which some people do not even use… Imagine following one’s heart without common sense wisdom, one will be following an unwise heart.

Hence, the true meaning of following one’s heart is the countless work behind the heart to develop wisdom. A quiet and thoughtful mind can help one see things clearer and bring about a clearer understanding of the realities of life to help enhance one’s wisdom of the heart.

I am learning to follow my heart…with wisdom..  If one follows one’s heart that is filled with negative emotions, then mistakes are often made which one may regret later. A heart that is calm, filled with a clear seeing of realities is a heart worth following…

Thank you Lyn for another beautiful post … a lot of people use this phrase ‘I follow my heart’ but without clear understanding what they are following, which usually are a mixture of emotions both positive and negative. Following a confused heart can cause a lot of problems, I agree it is important to know our heart before we follow it.

    Lyn,
This morning I said to my husband, it is Friday and I am late to read Lyn’s post. He replied: I read it and first thing in the morning.’ indeed, I followed my heart, straight to sit on my sewing machine to stitch a sofa cover requested by a friend who recently moved into a care home. I was thinking of a few good words to sew on her sofa cover. After reading your blog, I found the words which will not cause any adverse effect to the recipient. LOVE and KINDNESS as my friend, in her dementia stage, still wrote me a nice letter, asking me to sew the cover and she will donate money to charity of my choice. Am I writing lots and out of context? Thanks for another thought challenging article.

      Nice one Lyn!
The most logical logic doesn’t always work in all situations. We deal with some things with our emotions and feelings, which is our heart. Thanks for sharing with us on following our heart….with wisdom!

Thank you for sharing. You are so right about a conflicted mind or a conflicted heart, whichever comes 1st. Hehe…

Whichever the case, the core values play a huge part on the actions we take.

    “Follow Heart but with Wisdom”

    Absolutely agree

One will never follow their own inner voice until they clear up the doubts in their mind.

Also as you rightly mentioned that simple wisdom is to use common sense
So we should Follow our heart but we should always take our brain (wisdom) with us.

    Thank You
