Gui Ren (贵人) In Our Life Journey

by | Oct 29, 2021 | 20 comments

Do you believe in 贵人 Gui Ren, someone who would come along and give you a hand when you really needed it ? To make it easier for my international readers, I would define ‘Gui Ren’ as people sent by our guardian angels to help guide and support us to make our life more smooth sailing.

A close friend once told me that my life is surrounded by many Gui Ren, they can be bosses; colleagues; families; friends or even strangers. Yes, I am extremely grateful that my life has been very blessed and indeed there have been many people who have helped me in so many ways and some have guided me well to avoid potential life crises.

The thing is, I strongly believe that everyone can be surrounded by Gui Ren, though not all can see or appreciate their presence. I have seen many examples of how one could unconsciously reject help or turn people away who could be their Gui Ren, and ended up being constantly struggling alone.

Attract Gui Ren By Our Way Of Living

Our human mind controls what we want to see and hear, and how each of us could pick up different messages in the same conversations of a group of people. How you adjust your mindset accordingly can help you see things beyond your own understanding and belief.

Simply put, if our mind is not conditioned to recognize others point of view and help, we will never see them.

So even if there are Gui Ren in your life, you may not experience them unless you are humble enough to accept their presence and practice active listening. Arrogance can blind spot a person and hence unconsciously block off potential help.

There are many different signs of arrogance and I constantly remind myself to stay grounded with these 3 watchlists:

  1. Have a hard time doing self-reflection
  2. Do not like to be told what to do
  3. Interrupt others in a conversation

Once you practise humility, you are more likely to practise active listening. You would be humble enough to:

  1. pay attention to the conversation
  2. try and understand the message behind
  3. seek clarification and reflect on them before you jump into any conclusion.

We can all attract Gui Ren by our way of living. Above are just examples of my practices which I hope you find them helpful. Active listening will always give us fresh perspective, motivates others to share their ideas and could potentially enlighten us with the answer to a challenging situation.

I used to be very selective in my listening, only want to hear what I want to hear and filter out everything else which was a sure door to many troubles in my life.

We Control Our Destiny

There is absolutely no perfection in life, and I have also encountered countless ups and downs in life. While there are some things in life we cannot control, we can certainly control our destiny by how we think and react.

It is our thoughts that trigger our words and actions, and hence a single thought has great latent power to move our life in a particular direction. So it is all about adjusting our mindset and attitude, to widen our own circle of influence instead of expecting things to change to accommodate our beliefs.

When we are more open to self-change and adjustments, we open up our mind to recognize and experience more Gui Ren to help us in our life journey and make it more smooth sailing !

Thumbs up for this lovely posting Lyn.
I too believe in being open-minded and open-hearted so that we can recognise our Gui Ren . Many people chase away their Gui Ren because they lack humility and therefore their lives become narrow, and even difficult.
    Thank you for sharing….

Yes Indeed. When we are less centered and self absorbed, we are more open to listen to ideas and views that are different from our own perspectives. Gui Ren come when they are welcomed.

Lovely articles! Lyn! I learned so much from your sharing.
    My reflection:
Gui Ren is all around us.
Active Listening will bring Gui Ren closer to us.
Humility will allow Gui Ren to stay and live with us.
We might also be the Gui Ren of people around us.

Great advice, Lyn, on active listening, self reflection and controlling our own destiny. More often than not, when people come and lend a helping hand, it could be mis-interpreted as “busy body”.

Remove all the mind block and start having an open conversation!

Thanks for another great tip for life..

Absolutely resonate with your point about removing all mind block..oftentimes our predetermined thoughts would shut down any points before it was even given a chance to be completely understood..yes open conversations. Thank you so much Viv for your sharing your insights !

A lovely post, Lyn and something I have been thinking more of lately. I particularly liked this sentence: “Simply put, if our mind is not conditioned to recognize others point of view and help, we will never see them.”
I think keeping an open mind can assist in cultivating more happiness in our lives. A closed mind becomes easily frustrated that other people aren’t toeing the line and thinking similarly to themselves. An open mind welcomes that challenge of stretching the thoughts using empathy to understand the other person might be at a different stage of their journey through life and have different needs and attitudes.

Thank you so much Amanda ! Your encouragement and very insightful comment means a lot for a new blogger like me and my readers. Absolutely resonated with your points on open and closed mind, it is being expressed with such great clarity. I like particularly the sentence on “.. stretching the thoughts using empathy to understand ..”, a really refreshing point. How many of us would actually see it from this perspective, takes an open mind and open heart too ❤️.
