A Great Start To 2022 – The Walkers

by | Jan 7, 2022 | 12 comments

First week of 2022, I am so thrilled to have already walked many more steps on the average than I did in 2021! The big question is whether I can sustain this momentum and I believe I can!

For a start, I am finally able to join a group of my friends, all retirees like me, in their regular weekly nature walk to explore different parts of Singapore. This has been a long overdue for me due to my other commitments last year, and I have consciously planned this walk into my renewed set of routines coming into the new year.

This Wednesday morning, the 5th of Jan was my first group walk and I asked my sister along. We did not know what to expect. Most of last year, I have been walking mostly with Miso, my dog, and very rarely do I cross 10000 steps each time.

Henderson Waves

We walked the Henderson Waves,The Southern Ridges. For all of us individually, it was not our first time walking there but it certainly felt like it was our first. It was the first time the five of us have come together and our chemistry was amazing.

It really was more than just a walk. We talked, we laughed, we took many fun wefies, we enjoyed each other’s company and before we realised it, we had already walked 12 km and 17000 steps!

Weather was very kind to us too. For the past few weeks, it had been very rainy and wet but this morning was fantastic. Cooling with clear blue sky and we managed to capture some good photo shots.

Throughout the 3.5 hours walk, my friends were always looking out for my sister, (whom they had met for the first time) to ensure she was coping well. This simple warm-hearted act has gone a long way with my sister and made her felt so at home with the group.

Mid-way through, we were already planning what to eat at the end of the walk and I must confess that this in itself was a huge motivation for me to complete the walk towards our final destination😄.

Our Treats After A Long Walk

Good food brings people together and here our bond is sealed as we shared and got to enjoy a variety of the food below, yes the Asian style communal sharing 😀. Super yummy food, thank goodness we were a little early to avoid the lunch crowd. By the time we were done, all the food stalls already had long queue formed.

We Are The Walkers

At the beginning of the walk, my sister and I were honestly not sure if this would be our one off experience and if we are ready to commit ourselves to a weekly walk. At the end of the walk, a Whatsapp Chat Group was created and we called ourselves “The Walkers”!  This tells it all, isn’t it?

I am grateful to both my friends who have helped to organise this and made it so engaging and fun for all of us. Great company makes all the difference and amongst us, there is a movie director who has already made an amazing video of our walk; a wefie expert who took so many awesome photos of all 5 of us in good proportion; a great exploration guide who has already planned our next walk to Bukit Brown!

Happy to have a great healthy start to 2022 and thankful for the great company with “The Walkers”…Simple joyful living!

Hi Lyn, I’m also a keen walker like you and your friends. I wish to join your “weekly walking club” if possible.

Just when your group was walking along Henderson Waves on 5 Jan, I was walking leisurely all by myself that day in Gardens by the Bay from 10am to 4pm, at the same time visiting Floral Fantasy, Cloud Forest, Flower Dome, Orient Express and OCBC Skywalk. It was relaxing and therapeutic. Anyway, it was not the first time I walked alone for hours. Not that I am anti-social or a loner, but most of my friends are working on weekdays. LOL. I would prefer weekday walks to avoid the crowd.

Hope to be able to join your group one day if there’s opportunity. 🙂

Hi Bee Eng, great to know fellow keen walker and thank you for reaching out. I enjoy doing solo leisure walk as well and agreed Gardens by the Bay is so amazingly relaxing and therapeutic!

I would love to welcome you to The Walkers whenever opportunity arises and I will certainly check with my group leader once the 5 people covid social distancing restrictions opens up. Lets stay in touch.
